Stump Grinding in Laredo, TX

Get rid of the trip hazard, the mower-wrecker and the mesquite that keeps sprouting back. Stumps are ground below grade so you can use the space again.

Why grind a stump instead of leaving it

  • Mesquite regrowth. Mesquite resprouts from buds at and below the base, so a cut stump can turn into a thorny thicket. Grinding below grade removes much of that bud zone.
  • Space and safety. Stumps are trip hazards, block mowing and get in the way of patios, fences and new plantings.
  • Pests and decay. A rotting stump can attract termites and other wood-boring insects close to the house.

How stump grinding works

A stump grinder is a machine with a toothed cutting wheel. The wheel chews the stump and the main surface roots into wood chips, below ground level. Compact grinders fit through most backyard gates. Bigger machines handle large live oak or mesquite stumps faster when there's access.

  1. Locate utilities first. Before any grinding, buried lines need to be marked. In Texas, call 811 a few business days ahead. Irrigation lines and invisible pet fences aren't marked by 811, so point them out.
  2. Clear rocks around the stump. Caliche and rock are common in Laredo soils, and hitting them dulls teeth and throws debris.
  3. Grind to the agreed depth. A few inches below grade is common for lawns. Deeper grinding is needed if you're planting a new tree nearby or pouring concrete.
  4. Handle the chips. Leave them as mulch or backfill, or have them hauled away and the hole topped with soil.

After grinding

Expect some settling as remaining roots decay. Top up with soil if needed. If a mesquite stump was ground, watch for new sprouts over the following months and cut or treat them while they're small. If you plan to plant a new tree, put it a few feet away from the old stump spot rather than directly in the chips.

What affects the price

  • Stump diameter (measured at ground level) and how many stumps
  • Species and hardness. Old mesquite and oak are dense
  • Access through gates and over landscaping
  • Grinding depth, and whether surface roots also need grinding
  • Chip cleanup and soil backfill

Bundling stump grinding with a tree removal is usually simpler than scheduling it separately.
